Captain Don’s Habitat, Bonaire January 7-14, 2012

Drift away to Bonaire to enjoy one of the world’s most popular dive locations!

Join Evelyn on an 8 day/7 night adventure on the beautiful island of Bonaire in the Netherlands Antilles.  You will have the opportunity to dive the “Macro Capital of the Caribbean” and the “home of diving freedom”.   Founded by legendary Capt. Don Stewart, Capt. Don’s Habitat is consistently rated as one of the top dive resorts in the world.  We have several dive packages available; a 12 boat dive package with unlimited shore diving and Nitrox, a 6 boat dive package with shore diving and Nitrox, or a Shore Diving only package with Nitrox. The trip includes Breakfast daily and a car rental for every 5 people to get to those nice shore diving spots!

Resort

Founded in 1976, by renowned underwater environmentalist Captain Don Stewart, Habitat has been in the forefront of environmentally sound developments on the island of Bonaire.  His vision is also reflected in the design of the resort.

From the low impact construction methods, to the use of solar water heaters and energy saving devices, as well as a state of the art wastewater treatment system, every detail has been designed to have the least possible impact on the local environment.  The rooms and facilities are nestled in lush landscaping carefully designed to eliminate harmful runoff into the fragile marine eco-system thriving right in front of Captain Don’s Habitat.

Walking through the resort, one can truly appreciate a broad spectrum of the flora and fauna of Bonaire.  Iguanas, lizards, over 50 species of birds, and a wide variety of indigenous and imported species of plants and trees, create the perfect balance between world class accommodations and nature.

At Captain Don’s Habitat we’re very proud of our environmental legacy and we continue to play a very active role by assisting environmental groups and the local government in ensuring sound conservation policies and the sustainable management of Bonaire’s natural resources.

Dive

Capt. Don’s Habitat Dive Operation is a PADI 5-Star Gold Palm Resort. It is centrally located within the resort complex for easy access from all rooms. We have three 1-tank boat departures daily to over 70 moored sights on our custom built, diveboats. Each mooring buoy is limited to 1 boat so you’ll have the reef all to yourself.

Total Diving Freedom has always been the concept at Capt. Don’s Habitat. Over 50 world class dives are within a 15 minute boat ride. Diving Freedom means 24 hours a day, 365 days a year with no rush or anxiety. Take a giant stride off our divers-only pier “baby dock” and you’re already looking at clusters of starlet coral, surrounded by colorful wrasse and gobies, and the drop-off starts in 30 feet, only a few kicks away. Shore diving is a must at Habitat and around the island of Bonaire rated as the top shore diving destination in the world! Following accepted safe diving practices, you can grab a tank and go….whenever you want!

Photo Services are also provided  and we offer our guests a full selection of the latest in photo and video equipment for rent or sale, personalized instruction and private photo shoots.

Habitat is neither pretentious nor regimented. Our multilingual, multicultural, professional staff are there to teach, assist, or advise in a relaxed and friendly manner. Whether you’ve been diving for years or are just starting out, Habitat diving will keep you happy.

Dive Conditions

Bonaire’s pristine reefs and diverse marine life are unique to the Caribbean. Because the waters around Bonaire have been protected by an actively managed marine park for the past 25 years, Bonaire today ranks among the top four best diving destinations in the world. The island’s location in the south Caribbean gives it an arid climate with little rain fall; consequently, the waters are exceptionally clear of silt, calm, and dive-able year round. It is an ideal destination for underwater photographers. Water temperatures average a warm 78-84°F (25.6-28.9°C), with visibility averaging over 100 feet (30m), and frequently reaching up to 150 feet (50m).

The Bonaire Marine Park

The fringing reef which surrounds Bonaire is a National Marine Park from the high water mark down to a depth of 200 feet/60m. Every diver who has not dived on Bonaire within the last calendar year must attend a diver orientation dealing with Bonaire Marine Park regulations and information. These orientation sessions are usually held at around 9AM the morning after you arrive on Bonaire, and you are required to attend and to obtain your Marine Park tag, which is necessary to legally dive in Bonaire’s waters. The cost of the tag is US$25, and proceeds help support park management and services.
